Bäniyala

Bäniyala is a Yolŋu homeland of about 150 people located 210km or about a four-hour drive from Nhulunbuy.

The Bäniyala community was re-established in the 1970s by traditional landowners. The Bäniyala community also played a pivotal role in Australia’s history when traditional owners led the way on the recognition of sea rights, with the successful Blue Mud Bay sea rights case. The Blue Mud Bay sea rights case recognised First Nations’ native title rights to the intertidal zone for the first time.

The Bäniyala community is situated on Blue Mud Bay in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is home to the Bäniyala Garrangali Aboriginal Corporation’s Dholuwuy Campground and community accommodation.

A permit is required from the Northern Land Council to visit this homeland and to camp a permit is required from Bäniyala Garrangali Aboriginal Corporation.
