Gapuwiyak
Gapuwiyak is a Yolŋu community of about 1000 people located 220km from Nhulunbuy, or about a three-hour drive. It is 24km off the Central Arnhem Rd.
The Gapuwiyak community was established in the 1960s with the arrival of missionaries. A mission was developed based around a timber mill that supplied cypress pine to other missions in the region.
Today Gapuwiyak is home to the Gapuwiyak Culture and Arts Centre, and the community sits on the shore of the picturesque Lake Evella.
A permit is required from the Northern Land Council to visit this community.
